What Is Trenchless Pipe Repair?
The traditional method for pipe or sewer line repair or replacement is known as ‘trenching’. In a nutshell, the repair company has to dig down to the damaged pipe and also along the length of that pipe in order to have access to it. If that pipe is under your backyard they dig up your backyard. If it’s under your parking lot they dig up your parking lot.
If the pipe is in front of your house they may have to dig up the street, reroute traffic and unavoidably damage city-owned property.
And since you get to pay for all this it’s understandable that you might seek out an effective alternative.
Trenchless Pipe Repair fixes or replaces pipe where it actually is without digging up the ground all along the pipe. As you’ll see in a moment one of two access holes will be required to carry out the repair. But that’s nothing compared to the upheaval and disruption of having to dig a trench the length of the damaged pipe.
What Is The Advantage Of Trenchless Pipe Repair?
Sometimes traditional trench repairs are the best – or only – solution for a cracked or broken pipe.

How Does Trenchless Pipe Repair Work?
The two methods of trenchless pipe repair are
- cured-in-place pipe lining (CIPP)
- pipe bursting
Cured-In-Place Pipe Lining
This method uses a pipe-liner that is blown into the damaged pipe and then expanded hard onto the inside of the pipe. The liner sets against the inside of the pipe and forms a new, jointless pipe-within-a-pipe. Although this new pipe reduces your sewer line’s diameter by about a quarter of an inch it doesn’t affect the capacity of the pipe to remove waste from your property. Pipe lining usually requires the digging of just one access hole.
Pipe lining can’t work in all circumstances. If the broken pipe has joints or has collapsed then we may utilise pipe bursting instead.
Pipe Bursting
Here, using specially designed equipment we pull a new pipe through the broken one. As the new pipe is pulled through the old one the old one is further broken and displaced outwards. Pipe bursting requires two access holes to be dug – one at either end of the damaged pipe. When the pulled pipe emerges from the second access hole it has effectively replaced the damaged pipe.
